Matrix is a decentralized protocol we use for real-time communication in the community. It supports end-to-end encryption and offers both direct messaging and organized channels for communication.
It is a federated protocol. We run our own homeserver at matrix.gaboule.com.
For additional information, please check out the Matrix concepts reference.
How to get a Matrix account?
With a Gaboule account (easiest!)
If you don't have a Gaboule account and would like one, register today!
Send an email to apply@gaboule.com via Member Mail requesting a Matrix account linked with your Gaboule account.
Then when logging in a Matrix client:
- Your MXID is
@yourusername:gaboule.com - When asked for a homeserver, it should be
gaboule.com - Always choose the option to continue logging in with your Gaboule account
Use your own instance (harder if you're not experienced)
We encourage you to run your own Matrix homeserver if you have experience with server administration.
Use other people's instances
We recommend anything other than matrix.org's instance as it is very slow.
The Matrix protocol has a weakness regarding metadata. This is a problem with almost any federated protocol. While we do not exploit this or resell your information, others may. You should exercise caution because your account activity could reveal your identity depending on your interactions.
In other words, your homeserver knows who you talk to but doesn't know the content of the messages you send if you are chatting in a end-to-end encrypted room.
Proceed with caution and choose safe and up-to-date instances!
I got my Matrix account! How do I join you now?
Use any client you'd like. We run our fork of Cinny on the web and recommend FluffyChat for your phone.
We DO NOT recommend:
-
Element
- Collects telemetry by default
- Takes up a lot of RAM (based on Electron)
-
Any client that doesn't support:
- E2EE
- For 1:1 chats, you should use E2EE.
- SSO
- If you are registered on the Gaboule homeserver, SSO login support is required.
- E2EE
Once you got a client, just join the Gaboule space and on general!
